made weapons.<\/big><\/p>\n<p><big>Tools as Weapons<\/p>\n<p>Many agricultural tools make excellant weapons.\u00a0 Notable examples are axes, machetes, cane knives and mattocks.\u00a0 Slaves handle these every day\u00a0 and when they run away they usually take something with them.<\/big><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 492px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" Axe<\/p><\/div>\n<p><big>The Felling Axe is a basic tool for harvesting lumber and clearing land.\u00a0 It also makes an excellent weapon.<br \/>\n<\/big><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cane Knife<\/p><\/div>\n<p><big>A cane knife is used for cutting sugar cane, and can be a handy weapon in brawl. <\/big><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><big>Belaying Pin<br \/>\nThe belaying pin is an essential tool on a sailing ship.\u00a0 It serves as a convenient and removable anchor for ropes and lines.\u00a0 Its size and shape also makes it a handy weapon in close combat and since most merchant ships keep the arms locker secured against the crew, it is often the first choice of mutineers.<\/big><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption pin<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><big>Many of the African born slaves retain the skills of their previous lives and are quite capable of fabricating spears, bows, war clubs and even more sophisticated weapons if opportunity and materials present themselves.\u00a0 Similarly, Native American slaves, and those still at liberty, can make weapons as appropriate to their needs.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Indentured European servants, many of whom are little better then slaves and are equally resentful of their status, can add their own craft skills when needed.\u00a0 Simple, but effective, crossbows are found in the hands of escaped slaves.\u00a0 <\/big><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1390px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/pirates.missiledine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/bow.jpg\" alt=\"Bow\" width=\"1380\" height=\"774\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bow<\/p><\/div>\n<p><big>The basic bow is made by many escaped slaves.\u00a0 It is not very effective against an armored opponent, but it is adequate to deter most would be slave catchers.<\/big><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: height=\"152\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steel Crossbow<\/p><\/div>\n<p><big>European steel crossbows like this are not often found in the hands of escaped slaves, but they are found in the homes of some European settlers and in the armories in some forts and even on a few ships.\u00a0 Left overs from earlier years they can still be valuable in a pinch.<\/big><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: class=\"wp-caption-text\">Simple Wood Crossbow<\/p><\/div>\n<p><big>Simple wooden crossbows like this are found in the hands of many an escaped slave or servant.\u00a0 Not as powerful as the steel bows they are none the less a useful weapon for hunting and deterring pursuit as well as the occaissional raid.<\/big><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption
