Good guns are expensive! Their owners take care of the weapons, cleaning them after use, oiling them against damp and guarding them from theft or loss.<\/p>\n

Black powder or gun powder, has corrosive effects on steel and it essential to clean a weapon after use. The powder also leaves a residue, known as ‘fouling’ on the inside of the barrel. When multiple shots are fired the residue can build up and actually inhibit loading. This is especially an issue for rifled weapons.<\/p>\n

Black Powder comes in three grades, fine “priming” powder, coarser “charging” powder and very coarse “cannon” powder.\u00a0 It sells for $2 per pound regardless of type.
\n<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

Standard powder kegs weigh about 100lbs, with a volume of 1.25 cubic feet. There is sufficient powder in one keg for about 4,000 musket loads or about 6,000 to 8,000 pistol loads. A typical musket load is 150 to 200 grains. <\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

There are 40 shots to a pound for a musket, musketoon, rifle or blunderbuss. 80 shots to a pound for a pocket pistol, 75 for a belt pistol, 65 for a horse pistol, 50 for an Arquebus.<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

Shot, most people cast their own and a firearm comes with a mold to make bullets for the weapon (one at a time). A musket typically gets between 10 and 20 shots per pound of lead. A pistol 15 to 25. (a cubic foot of pure lead weighs 712.5lbs.)<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

Igniters<\/big><\/big><\/strong><\/p>\n

Match, their are two varieties, quick and slow.<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

Quick Match is used as a fuse. Its speed can vary from 1 foot per minute to 4 yards per minute.<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

Slow Match is used to keep fire handy. It burns at 4 inches per hour. (Used in Matchlocks.)
\n<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

Both varieties weigh 1lb per 5 yards.<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

A pound of match costs $10.<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

Flints, A flint is good for around 12 to 15 shots. A keg of flints weighs 70lbs and holds about 10,000 flints.<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

Pyrites (used in Wheellocks) are a little heavier and less durable. One is good for about 8 to 12 shots. A 100lb keg holds about 50,000 firings.<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

Wadding and Cartridge Paper<\/big><\/big><\/strong><\/p>\n

Wadding is either cloth, paper or leather, it is placed over the charge to provide a seal, and over the shot to keep it in place.<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

When paper cartridges are used, a bundle weighs about 40lbs and occupies a cubic foot, it is sufficent for 16,000 cartridges. Old sail cloth is often used for wadding.<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

Costs<\/big><\/big><\/strong><\/p>\n

Sufficient powder, lead, wadding and igniters for 100 shots costs $18<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n

The bullets must be cast by the user.\u00a0 Powder is loose, cartridges must be made if desired.<\/big><\/big><\/p>\n
